“Those girls should be expelled,” my Uncle Peter says as Aunt Kacey helps me wash my hair in the kitchen sink.

“It won’t happen,” Aunt Kacey says, gently guiding her hands through my hair. “Where one mean girl falls, another will rise.”

“Or worse,” I manage beneath the hot tap water. “I get put in the grave.”

“What’re you talking about?” my uncle asks. “Is there something going on that we should know about?”

“Nothing that you or Aunt Kacey can change, Uncle Pete.”

“Those girls poured curdled milk on your head. We have to be able to do something.”

“She’s right, Peter,” Aunt Kacey says. “If we intervene, it might just make it worse.”

“And if we don’t? Who’s to say something worse won’t happen?”

“I’ve seen kids go to the principal for stuff like this before,” I offer as I lift my freshly-cleaned head out of the sink and wrap my hair in a towel. “It just gets worse. Sometimes much worse.”

My uncle’s face, though red, softens with understanding—and, it seems, disappointment. I haven’t even told them about the pool incident. I know that would completely throw them over the edge.

With a frown, I look down at Tibbles—who watches me with big green bug eyes at the sight of the towel around my head—then turn my gaze toward the threshold leading into the living room. “I told Sam I’d text her.”

“Do you need anything else from us?” my aunt asks as I start toward the stairway. “Anything at all?”

“Other than to make Courtney and Monica and Trisha disappear?” I ask. “No. I don’t.”

All I can think of as I march up the stairs is how much simpler my life would be without them.
